What vets really think about pet insurance

Hearing the words ‘they’re insured’ from a pet owner is such a relief to us as vets. It means we both know that the cost of treatment becomes a less significant barrier in major medical decision making. Our choices get to be made primarily on what we all agree is best for the pet.

What is lifetime pet insurance?

We know that your pet is a bona fide furry member of the family. They’re your therapy, your mood-booster, your happiness. So why would we ever want you to risk them running out of cover when they need it?

That’s why we only do lifetime pet insurance policies here at ManyPets.

It just means that whatever level of cover you choose, it’ll refresh each year when you renew your policy. You can claim up to the full vet fee limit every year and we’ll continue to provide cover for conditions your pet may develop during their lifetime.

So even if one year your pet needs treatment that costs an arm and a hind leg, you’ll still have the same amount of cover to fall back on after your policy renews.

How much does pet insurance cost?

Among other factors, the cost of your pet insurance in the UK will depend on:
  • Your pet’s breed

  • Where you live

  • How much your paid for your pet

  • Any pre-existing medical conditions they have

  • The policy you pick

The only way to know for sure is to get a pet insurance quote. Luckily, it only takes a few minutes.

Emergency pet care

All our policies have some cover for looking after your pet if you have an unplanned hospital stay.

We provide cover where some others won’t

Pre-existing conditions

All of our pet insurance policies cover conditions that haven’t needed any treatment, medication or advice for two years or more. We also have a dedicated Pre-existing policy for pets that can cover more recent conditions.

Dental treatment

Our Complete pet insurance policy covers dental accidents and illness, as long as your pet’s had a dental check-up within the last twelve months, and you’ve followed any dental treatment recommended by a vet within six months. All our other policies cover dental accidents.

Behavioural cover

We’ll cover behavioural treatment that’s needed as a result of an accident or injury when recommended by your vet.

Complementary treatments

If your pet is referred by a vet for hydrotherapy or another complementary therapy, you have cover within your vet fee limit. The level ranges from £500 to £2,500 depending on your policy.

Emergency vet care

We’ll cover any necessary out of hours treatment up to your vet fee limit, with no limits or exclusions, unless your vet advises that your pet can wait.

Pregnancy

Pet insurance doesn’t usually cover pregnancy complications, but some of our policies will cover them in a first pregnancy only, after you’ve had your policy for six months.

Pet insurance FAQs

All the questions you’ve ever wanted to ask about pet insurance.

How does pet insurance work?

When you take out a pet insurance policy, you’ll pay an annual or monthly premium to a pet insurance provider that’s bespoke to you and your pet. If they have an accident or fall ill, you can claim on your policy to cover the costs of any veterinary bills.

Although there are many types of pet insurance policy available, at ManyPets we only offer lifetime policies. That means whatever vet fee limit you pick, it’ll refresh each year when you renew your policy. You can claim up to the full vet fee limit every year and we’ll continue to provide cover for conditions your pet may develop during their lifetime.

A pet insurance policy will also usually cover some costs if your pet is lost or stolen, passes away, or has legal action taken against them.

How do I get a pet insurance quote?

Getting a pet insurance quote is easy. All you need to tell us is:

  • Your details and address

  • Your pet’s age

  • Your pet’s breed

  • Your pet’s gender

  • Your pet’s name

  • The price you paid for your pet

  • Your pet’s neutered status

Is pet insurance worth it?

Self-insurance is when people put money aside to cover potential vet costs rather than paying for an insurance policy.

The risk with it is that you don't know when your pet might need treatment and how much it will cost.

If you've only been saving for a few months and your pet has an expensive operation it's unlikely you'll have enough set aside. And if your cat or dog needs regular treatment it can quickly chip away at any savings.

If you have a lifetime pet insurance policy your vet fee limit will reset every year you renew. Our Complete policy would give you £15,000 of cover every year.

Even common issues like cuts and vomiting can cost hundreds of pounds to treat and more serious conditions can easily cost thousands. This is why many people choose to insure their pets.

What type of pet insurance is right for me?

If your pet hasn’t needed vet treatment, medicine or advice for a condition within the last two years, any of our Complete, Regular or Value policies will be suitable for them.

Our Pre-existing policy can provide cover for a pet that’s had a more recent health issue. We’ll cover a condition as long as your pet’s been free from treatment, medicine or advice for three months.

Does pet insurance cover vaccinations?

No, vaccinations aren’t covered by pet insurance because they’re classed as routine procedures.

Do I need pet insurance? Can I self-insure?

Self-insurance is when people put money aside to cover potential vet costs rather than paying for an insurance policy.

It's risky because you don't know when your pet needs treatment and how much it costs. You may not have enough to cover it.

For example, you likely won't have enough money to pay for expensive treatment if you've only been saving for a few months. And if your cat or dog needs regular treatment, it can quickly chip away at any savings.

We have more information about self-insurance in our article.

How does pet insurance excess work?

The excess is an amount you pay to an insurer when they pay for a claim. Our excess article covers more.

What's the minimum age my pet has to be for me to get insurance?

Most insurers won't cover pets until they are a few weeks old. But you can get a quote before they reach that age and buy a policy that starts when your pet is old enough.

Our policies cover pets that are at least four weeks old. Other insurers may have different minimum age limits.

Does pet insurance have a maximum age limit for pets?

Most of our policies have no upper age limit and will cover pets of any age. But some companies may not offer new policies to older pets.

If you already have a policy, you may find it has a compulsory excess and co-payment to keep premium costs down when your pet reaches a certain age. This usually happens when your pet turns nine.

A bit of guidance when you need it

Our articles are there when you need them for everything from the costs of taking on a new pet to treating fleas.
